Course Information
Description A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional.
Required Textbooks Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, the student will be able to:
• Demonstrate understanding of pharmacy operations (PSLO 2,3 & 6)
• Apply professional skills needed to function as a pharmacy technician (PSLO 1,3 & 6)
• Demonstrate how to safely and accurately dispense medications under the supervision of the registered pharmacist (PSLO 1, 4 & 5)
• Demonstrate effective communication (PSLO 3 & 6)
Program Student Learning Outcomes • Identify pharmaceutical drugs, abbreviations, classifications, dosages, side effects, and routes of administration.
• Know the federal and state laws governing the practice of pharmacy.
• Understand the qualifications, operational guidelines, and job duties of a pharmacy technician.
• Apply the skills necessary to process, prepare, label, and maintain records of prescriptions in a community pharmacy.
• Be able to complete pharmaceutical calculations and aseptic technique required for compound and sterile preparations.
• Demonstrate specialized pharmaceutical theory, skills, and concepts.
Lecture Topics Outline Student assessment will be based on clinical performance using the clinical preceptor evaluation rubric, attendance, and other related assignments.

Upon completion of 100% completion of clinical setting.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies Attendance Policy:

  • Students must have100% attendance in clinical setting
  • Students must be ON TIME for clinical rotations (at least 10 minutes early), NO exceptions unless documentation is provided, if a student is late, they must go home and return to clinical site depending on the day of tardiness. (If Wednesday returns on Thursday, if Thursday do not return until the following week, with a meeting being scheduled with the instructor.)
  • If an absence occurs, the proper documentation must be provided to the instructor and notice must be given by contacting the instructor.
  • Make-up days will be scheduled at the end of the semester at the discretion of the instructor and preceptor pending reason for absence with the proper documentation.
  • Students who stop attending class or clinical and do not drop, withdraw, or resign from the college may receive a grade of “F” for all coursework missed.
  •  It is the student’s responsibility to obtain lecture material, and exam make-up if an absence occurs with the proper documentation.
  • Absences affect performance in this course and do not reflect well on participation, NO student may substitute the attendance of another student at any time.

COVID 19 Information The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
